I don’t think they are really disputed by the general public, but by a loud vocal minority spreading fear and misinformation about what gun violence prevention really is. We’re talking about preventing gun violence, not controlling anyone’s right to own a gun.

Responsible gun ownership is a critical piece of the gun violence prevention agenda. Too many people die each year because a gun was not stored securely, including our children. Check out our Be SMART campaign atbesmartforkids.org. Also, too many states will even let people carry guns in public without any safety training whatsoever. And the gun lobby is working in statehouses to convince lawmakers to let people carry guns without any permit whatsoever. That’s not responsible: that’s dangerous.

It’s important to point out that gun violence prevention should not be a partisan issue, but rather an issue of public health and safety. Gun violence impacts people of all political persuasions, from every walk of life. This isn’t about taking guns away from law abiding gun owners, who more often than not agree with common-sense measures – this is about keeping guns out of the hands of people with dangerous histories.
When engaging folks in a conversation about gun violence prevention, I’d recommend focusing on shared values – research shows that Americans overwhelmingly agree on common-sense measures to reduce gun violence. In fact, 93 percent of Americans—including 83 percent of gun owners and 72 percent of NRA members—support criminal background checks on all gun sales.

Thanks so much for being a leader on gun violence prevention–you’re already on the right track!
Registering voters is a crucial piece of holding our elected officials accountable at the polls, especially when they’ve taken money from the NRA and support their dangerous “guns everywhere for anyone” agenda. Check out our action plan to throw out elected officials who are beholden to the gun lobby.
Another great way to get your school involved is by encouraging your friends and classmates to join Students Demand Action, a student-driven gun violence prevention group. Text STUDENTS to 644-33 to join!
Saturday is the first day of National Gun Violence Survivors Week – when we ask everyone to shine a spotlight on the stories of Americans who have had loved ones taken by gun violence, who have been wounded or threatened with a gun, or witnessed a shooting.
We’ll be sharing the stories of survivors and statistics that highlight the impact of gun violence.
