For Women’s History Month, we’re highlighting some freshmen members of the House Gun Sense Majority who are making history as part of the most diverse Congress since our country was founded.

First up is Representative Lucy McBath. Her son, Jordan, was shot and killed for playing music loudly when he was just 17 years old. Since then, she has been a Moms Demand Action volunteer, a fierce advocate for the gun safety movement, and most recently, a member of Congress, bringing the experience and stories of gun violence survivors to the table.

This weekend, our Faith Outreach Community Leader Lucy McBath traveled to Mother Emanuel AME Church in Charleston to deliver hundreds of handmade cards inscribed with messages of hope and faith, along with condolences from more than 300,000 Americans

Your condolence messages helped turn grief into a national call to action. We know it’s working because politicians and retailers are responding.

Thank you for your continued inspiration.

“All parents take on a weighty responsibility. But as a mother to a young man of color, I had a greater struggle. I had to help my son beat the odds against all the things that stand in the way of young black men. I raised him with love and diligence and was determined to make sure that the pitfalls that swallow up so many young men of color would not take Jordan.

In the end, they did. He was a victim of the ills of a system in society that does not always support and protect our black men. For this reason I now fight for all young men of color.”
