51 years ago today, a bullet took the life of President John F. Kennedy. It was the first of several assassinations in a turbulent decade, and Congress ultimately took action. Five years after JFK’s death, Congress passed a law prohibiting certain dangerous people from buying guns including felons, domestic abusers, and the severely mentally ill. This law is still the centerpiece of our federal gun laws.
Every day, 86 Americans are killed by gun violence. How many potential leaders and gifted minds were taken from us before their time? We will never know the true cost or what might have been.
